Supplement Label Reading Guide

📊 A Guide to Reading Labels in Sports Nutrition

When buying sports supplements, it is not enough to just look at the "protein amount" or "promises". The details hidden on the back of the label directly affect the content you take into your body. In this guide; we simplify what you need to know about aspartame, additives, sweeteners and filler content.

❌ What is Aspartame and Why Should It Be Avoided?

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that has been used in sweet drinks and supplements for many years. There is research that it can cause headaches, digestive problems, and even negative effects on the nervous system in some people in the long term. For this reason, many “clean” supplement brands are turning to more natural alternatives to aspartame.

🌿 Sweetener Options: What's Used?

Common sweeteners used instead of aspartame:
✔️ Stevia: It is plant-based, natural and calorie-free.
✔️ Sucralose: It's super sweet but an artificial compound that can't be digested.
✔️ Erythritol: It is a natural sugar alcohol and does not irritate the stomach.
When buying supplements, the phrase "0% sugar" is nice, but you need to be careful about which sweetener is used.

Additives and Fillers: Friend or Foe?

Protein powders or BCAAs sometimes include phrases like “maltodextrin,” “gum blend,” or “aroma.” The earlier they appear on the ingredient list, the higher the amount.

Things to watch out for: Aspartame, acetic colorants, extra starch-based fillers.
You may be comfortable with: Natural flavor, coconut milk powder, stevia, plant fibers.

📝 Prioritize These When Reading Tags:

✔️ Is the protein content between 70-80%?
✔️ Is the amino acid profile specified?
✔️ What was used as a sweetener?
✔️ Is the carbohydrate and fat ratio reasonable?
✔️ Are there any extra vitamins/minerals added?
If you answer these questions while reading labels, you can choose the product that will truly benefit you.
